Healthcare nightmare

Here’s a guy from England who had his appendix removed – TWICE – by one of those supposedly wonderful health care systems that we’re supposed to want for ourselves here in the US.  Not only is his problem not fixed, he’s lost his job in the meantime.  Take away the competition and there’s no incentive to perform well – hence stupid mistakes.

Contrast that with my situation.  My 5-year old has a medical issue – not life-threatening, but something that needs to be dealt with.  My health insurance, paid for through/by my employer, will end up covering 80% of most of the costs, 100% of a few items. I can get second opinions.  I can shop around and pick doctors and hospitals.  Those doctors and hospitals have an incentive to perform, since their jobs depend on their reputations.

I dread a situation in which I would be dictated what doctor to take her to and what hospital she could be seen at.  Maybe we’d be lucky and get a good doctor – maybe we’d be unlucky and get one like the guy who had his appendix removed TWICE.  Seems like an easy choice to me – I’ll keep the healthcare I have now.

Fun Facts

According to a Harvard School of Public Health study, nearly twice as many people commit suicide in the 15 states in the US with the highest gun ownership rates than in the six states with the lowest rates.
