Living in the USA, where we have rights, due process, jury of our peers, etc…, it’s easy to forget just how savage and brutal people are in certain parts of the world. It’s depressing to read the daily articles out of the Middle East, but I think it’s important to read one once in awhile, both to remind ourselves how good we have it and to keep in perspective the difference between our society and theirs.
The article that stood out for me this week involves a young Sudanese woman who has been sentenced to execution by stoning for adultery.
Intisar Sharif Abdallah, the young girl in question, is suspected to be under 18 years old, although another source estimated her at 20. In a civilized country, we’d know her age because of birth records, but apparently that’s a problem in Sudan.
According to the article, a family member beat her until she confessed to adultery. She was put on trial based on that forced confession. Even Arabic isn’t her first language, she wasn’t given an interpreter, and she didn’t have a lawyer. She’s being held in prison with her baby, as she awaits her punishment.
I watched a video one day of a stoning execution. I almost wish I hadn’t, but sometimes you have to look true evil in the face to really understand it. I couldn’t watch the whole thing, as it made me sick to my stomach. I looked at the faces of the crowd throwing the stones, with their smiles and excitement, and I knew that I was looking at pure hate. These sick twisted people use their religion to justify the brutal killing of those that would “offend” them. If you don’t follow their rules and worship their God, they will kill you and enjoy it.
Don’t let anyone tell you that there is no difference between religions or between societies.
