In this Wall Street Journal article, Glenn Reynolds states:

What’s most striking about the tea-party movement is that most of the organizers haven’t ever organized, or even participated, in a protest rally before. General disgust has drawn a lot of people off the sidelines and into the political arena, and they are already planning for political action after today.

This is one of the big points I have been trying to make when I talk about the liberal reaction to the Tea Party movement.  These are not your ordinary protestors.  Protests tend to be made up by liberal activists – we used to call them hippies.

Today’s Tea Party attendee is likely someone who’s never been to a protest before, made a sign before, or even dreamed about joining a crowd of people to complain about something.  Today’s Tea Party attendee is a regular person, finally driven out of frustration to get involved and do something.

And that’s why the liberals in power are scared.  They don’t understand what’s driving the movement, and they fear what they don’t understand.  They thought Obama would be their Great Communicator and that we’d all fall in line.  All this Tea Party and 10th Amendment stuff just doesn’t make any sense to them, and that worries them.
