How elite can you be?
Daniel Akst had a recent column where he speaks out against denim. George Will picked up on it and added his own comments. I didn’t notice until Michelle Malkin added her two cents…
I read all three articles, although in reverse order. Then I read them again in the order they were written. What struck me was the vast difference in tone between Akst and Will. Both were writing against the same thing, and yet they presented themselves so differently. I got the impression from reading Akst’s article that he wrote it to be a humorous tongue-in-cheek piece.
Will’s article, on the other hand, left me feeling that he made every attempt to insult and denigrate anyone who would be foolish enough to wear jeans. He gives the impression that he looks down upon anyone who isn’t as “upper-crust” as himself.
At least the day was saved by Malkin adding some levity and showing us that it’s possible to be in the media without being part of the media elite. She’s welcome to visit us wearing jeans anytime. We’ll be wearing ours.
