I almost spoke too soon earlier today.  I worked through lunch and took off early, swung by and picked up tomato and green pepper sets, and made it home around 4:30pm.  I started tilling the garden again, and it was almost still too wet.  I managed to get through it, but didn’t get it tilled too deep.  Got the beans planted – this year I went with Burpee and made d*mn sure I got stringless pole beans.  In the past I’ve been careless and gotten ones that are “stringless when young”.  Ha.  Anyway, I didn’t take down my fence from last year, just tilled up next to it and planted along it.  I use cattle panels on steel fenceposts and hold them about 6″ off the ground, so I can weed underneath.  My 4-year-old daughter planted about 16 feet of the 48 feet total.  I had her using her shoes to measure between beans.  She did great until she decided she didn’t need to use the shoes anymore, and then it went kinda wild.

The 2 and 8-year-olds chipped in and helped plant the pepper and tomato plants.  They like watering the best, so I had them do that while I fixed and planted the rest of the beans.  A short row of radishes and we’re done for a bit.

I always struggle with rabbits here in town.  I hate having to deal with fences, because the only thing that really can keep a small rabbit out is chicken-wire (poultry netting).  Chicken-wire is also saggy, baggy, and impossible to make look good.  By the time I pull it back and forth 20 times during the season to mow and such, it’s just a nightmare.  This year I think I’m going to try some of the blood-based repellents to see if I can keep the rabbits away without having to have the dumb fence.  If it works, I’ll post the brand name so others can use it.

Once things start coming up, I’ll try to get some pictures posted.

I’m thinking TOTUS would have sped up the ordering process a little.  Obama’s wearing out his neck scanning that overhead menu trying to decide what to eat.  Biden looks nervous as hell, with that constant grin on his face, like he’s afraid a regular person might brush up against him or something.  He’s gotta be thinking, “What the heck is this, we’re running this country and we’re in a burger joint?  Where’s the champagne and caviar they promised me when I signed up for this gig?”

I think they said the burgers ran around $7 each, and that he bought for the press too?  He had better have dropped one heck of a tip to make up for all the hassle.

I think tonight might finally be the night.  We’ve got a 20% chance of rain yet this afternoon, but if that doesn’t happen, I think it’ll finally be dry enough in my garden to get something planted.  Just like last year, it’ll be a marathon session trying to get it all done in one evening before it rains again or we get busy with something else.

I don’t get too fancy: green pole beans, green peppers, tomatoes, radishes, cabbage, broccoli, and maybe a cauliflower plant or two.  That’s about all I can keep up with.

Sadly, I lost my last match on Sunday.  Should have won, shot terrible, blah blah blah.  Lots of excuses that don’t mean anything.

Our last night of Pool League (for the Spring session) was this previous Sunday night.  I think I’ve mentioned before that we have 3 sessions – spring, summer and fall, followed by a yearly tournament in early January after the holidays.

I try to make a point of not shooting summer session.  It’s not that I don’t like to shoot, because I really do.  It’s really a combination of having a lot of other stuff going on in the summer, and also that the days are longer, so it feels like I’m wasting valuable sunlight by being in a bar at 7pm when it’s still bright outside.  I also seem to shoot better in the fall after having the summer off.

So, if you were going to surprise me on league night by showing up to heckle me, don’t bother until I start back up in the fall.

What I WOULD like to mention is that we were at Uncle Bob’s on N12th in Quincy.  I’ve given this bar a good mention before, as it’s generally clean and friendly.  Well, Sunday night the place was pretty clean, but the pool table was filthy.  The balls were dull, and if you picked them up they felt gritty.  Also, for whatever reason, people tend to congregate at the west end of the bar near the table, which makes it hard to shoot.  I’ll still list them in my top half of Quincy bars, but they could be better.

Instapundit has already picked up on this story.  I don’t think the Quincy City Council has any idea how far or how fast this news has the potential of spreading.

What I have trouble understanding is why didn’t the Dems on the council didn’t let McQueen speak?  Give the guy his 5 minutes or whatever, let him gripe about the water and sewer increases, and be done with it.  Denying his request to speak automatically makes it look like you’re either trying to hide something or afraid of what he might say.

If you have nothing to fear, let the guy talk.

This is just outrageous, and a blatant example of what power and corruption can do, even on a local level.

What you see here is a reaction to fear.  The Quincy Tea Party was in attendance at the City Council meeting, with McQueen as it’s local leader.  The Tea Party requested that anyone who attended on it’s behalf to be polite – no signs, no disruptions of the meeting, etc…   McQueen submitted a written request ahead of time to speak.  The Democrat majority present refused McQueen because they fear what they don’t understand.

Everyone out there that reads this, repeat this story everywhere you can.  Link to this article, to Bob’s article at Quincynews.org, and to any other article about this.  Let’s get this example of an abuse of power so well known that those involved will stop and think carefully before they do it again.

Napolitano’s name is out there a possible replacement forJustice Souter.  Some things come to mind:

Has she already screwed up so much in her Homeland Security job that it’s time to promote her to the Supreme Court?

Has Obama run out of boneheads to nominate, and is having to recycle?  Is that how he stays “green”?

Does “rigorous vetting process” at least check into whether or not they paid their taxes?

Article at ChicagoBreakingNews.com over the weekend.  Apparently a woman ran over a cyclist while painting her nails.  The bike stopped at a yellow light, the car carrying the moron nail-painter did not.

According to the article, the woman was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, but could face more charges.  Ya think?  Unless you’ve got a bunch of witnesses who saw the cyclist appear from thin air like some kinda bizarre magic trick, this woman should have the book thrown at her.

This always irritates me:

“It appears to be a tragic accident and it appears (Zaffke) did nothing wrong,” Lake County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Scott Morrison said.

Sorry, this kind of thing should never be called an accident.  Accidents are things like earthquakes or tornados.  Can’t stop ‘em, nobody’s fault that they happen.  This woman deliberately drove her car without looking at the road, with complete disregard to the possible consequences.

I imagine, however, that the flurry of activity will center around wanting to pass more laws regulating what we can and can’t do in our cars.  There will be a push to pass a law soon to specifically restrict which beauty functions can be done while driving and which require the car to be stopped.  Most of the detail of the law won’t make any sense, will confuse anyone trying to understand it, and won’t make anyone any more or less safe than before, but it’ll give our politicians something to talk about for awhile.

For those who might have missed it, Pat Quinn, now Governor of Illinois, formed the Illinois Reform Commission to investigate Illinois State Government ethics.  He formed this committee near the end of the joke that was the Blagojevich Governorship.

So, now the committee has come up with a report and recommendations.  Amazingly, it’s fairly concise for this kind of document.  I expected a massive tome, but 95 pages – not too painful.

So now what?  Well, House Republicans would like to call the entire House together to discuss the report.  Amazingly enough, or maybe not, House Democrats are too excited about doing that.

I guess it’s not too surprising, after all, the status quo of corrupt state government has served them well so far.  Chicago politicians control the state, the unions stay happy – heck, a Chicago politician even got elected President.  Why change anything?
